Helio Gutierrez, contemporary master of the San Juan de Oriente, Nicaragua pueblo, has built the modern style on top of the indigenous tradition of the village.
In 1992 Helio Gutierrez and his young apprentice Miguel Maldonado received an opportunity to display a group of ceramic vessels at the World Fair in Spain. This opportunity inspired a group of innovative work that continued to develop for the following years to the text and biggest notoriety to fall on the pueblo.
In 1999 Helio Gutierrez participated in the UNESCO craft fair in Argentina and one first place for his now famous "Hombe Pez" sculpture. This award catapulted Helio and the pueblo onto the international stage.
Over the past 10 years the development has broadened throughout the pueblo. Helio has traveled to many areas of the world representing his work as well as the San Juan pueblo.
Helio today as rejuvenated himself to his work and the advancement of his pueblo.
